PREDATORS
These are wildlife photography images of predators from the mayhem of the Masai Mara and Africa’s cats to the majestic tigers of India.
Wildlife photography was my my only form of photography for a number of years and it is still one of my favorite genres! This is little to beat being surrounded by wildlife with the thrill of not knowing what you going to get and the pressure of having to capture the moment before its lost forever!
All images are of free roaming predators and though a telephoto lens is essential for close up’s, I also enjoy going wider to incorporate the scenery for wildlife environmental portraits.
MAMMALS
These are wildlife photos that focus on all mammals with the exception of predators. Its a diverse collection from the great migration of Kenya to the deserts of Namibia, from the hot savannas of India to the icy Atlantic Ocean of Cape Town.
Just as I said for predators genre wildlife photography is one of my my favorite forms of photography. Often the predators and big mammals are main subjects but there is much to enjoy with the smaller mammals too. All images are of free roaming mammals some shot up close with a telephoto lens others with a wide angle to show them in their natural environment.
BIRDS & LITTLE CREATURES
Little creatures is a portfolio that concentrates on ‘critters’ and birds. A diverse collection, bird photography, reptiles, insects, life in the undergrowth, as well as closeups and a few macro shots.
I find the little creatures so fascinating as they’re forgotten or overlooked, also as its at ground level it’s from a perspective we don’t often view the world. Everything is shot here in the field, nothing is frozen or posed. Bird photography is a more specialist field that I thoroughly enjoy dabbling in, action bird photography is quite a skill, it takes a lot of patience and determination to capture outstanding shots and I greatly admire those who consistently pull this off.
EARTH
World wide landscape photos with a focus on earthly features such as mountains, trees, deserts, night skies, beautiful sunsets, autumn foliage etc in general these are nature only photos but at times structures are included as part of the landscape.
There are those who edit landscapes creatively, I choose to work with what I saw, so I don’t recreate anything that was not in the original scene. I don’t drop in skies, rainbows or light affects. Not a purist though I do clone out parts, blend images, focus stack, create pano’s, use different focal blends for full moon shots, saturate colours & enhance tonal ranges.
WATER
These are images of water features such as seascapes, waterscapes, waterfalls, reflections, ponds, lakes, essentially any landscape that includes a water body.
Seascapes and water featured landscapes can be quite intense to capture simply as water is the nemesis of camera gear! I have personally lost a camera to sea salt a few weeks after a drenching seascape shoot and had a client lose one directly to the ocean with a freak wave so a lot of care is needed when around waves and sea salt is spraying around. I tend to use ND filters, polarisers and blending techniques for most of my waterscapes, I do not create reflections in post, they’re a 100% real.
CITIES
Cityscapes essentially are an urbanized form of landscape photography with images of city skylines, buildings, bridges, car trails, bright lights etc
I tend to shoot cityscapes at all times during golden hour & blue hour most commonly but even middle of the day for black and white and with a graduated ND filter when its cloudy for effect. My favorite time though to shoot cities is at night when all the lights bring it to life. That said coming from South Africa I know cities can be dangerous so only shoot when opportunity allows for it.
ENVIRONMENTAL PORTRAITS
Environmental travel portraits are photos that show subjects in their natural environment. It differs from a traditional portrait in that it provides context, showing more of the person’s surroundings than just a face in front of a neutral background.
As a travel photographer I use environmental portraits to tell a story about the person & their way of life. Most of my environmental portraits are taken candidly capturing others such as this one of a Chinese Cormorant Fisherman I have asked permission beforehand.
TRAVEL PORTRAITS
Travel Portraits are more intimate than environmental portraits in that they’re close ups of faces showing eyes, expression, emotion.
When we travel photographing the iconic places, landscapes, buildings etc only tell part of the story, the true essence of a place lies in its people and these close up portraits tell their story. Like Environmental Portraits some of these images are candid, but I really enjoy meeting people when traveling so almost all of these images are of people I meet either before or after the photo was taken.
HUMAN ELEMENT
The Human Element is not a defined genre of photography, just my name for it. In essence this is a collection of world wide photos of grandiose places from landscapes to cities with small humans to show scale. FYI these are all 100% real no post creations.
This is one of my favorite forms of photography that I first started doing in 2010 as “selfies” around the mountains of Cape Town simply because there was no-one else to ask. The images here are a combination of candid and posed shots either as “selfies” or someone I have asked to stand in position.
STREET & CANDID
Street photography is also sometimes called candid photography and essentially is about photographing unmediated chance encounters and random incidents within public places.
I think of street photography in the same way as wildlife photography just photographing a different mammal. The skill set is similar in that you can’t pose or direct your subject, you need to shoot fast and often anticipate or wait for decisive moments. There is something really rewarding about capturing moments of life & freezing time.
STRUCTURE & INTERIORS
Structure Photography is looking closer at a city’s architecture for patterns and shapes, be they abstract or formed. I try concentrate on colors, contrasts, shapes, shadow and light.
Interior photography focus on rooms and/or the inside of buildings. The challenge is not only finding compositions but also keeping vertical and horizontal lines straight but it is these challenges that makes this such an interesting form of photography.
Both of these are new forms of photography for me and I am enjoying the learning curve
NEW IMAGES AND IMAGES FROM BLOG POSTS
These images are just as the title says new photos I have added to either a portfolio category or images I feel are select worthy from a blog post. This helps returning guests know where to find new updates and photos.
This website was refreshed and launched mid June 2017 so there’s aren’t any new images yet *smile*
