FAQ
IF I WISH TO PURCHASE AN IMAGE HOW DO I DO IT?

Please message me as there are so many different forms of photo selling and no 1 size fits all. For prints it will depend on the medium, the size and your location for postage. For commercial it will depend on usage (anything from online blog posts to commercial advertising) to duration of usage and its exclusivity.

Internationally for prints a “one off licence to print” is often the easiest solution. You choose your image, find a printing lab/store closest to you, deposit funds into my paypal or bank account, once funds clear the high res image is emailed to the print lab and then you deal with them directly printing in whatever size and medium you wish to suit your budget.

The reason I email directly to lab and not the buyer is to protect image from copyright infringements.

HOW TO USE THE LIGHTBOX TO VIEW IMAGES

The Image Lightbox is set to auto slideshow, to stop it, you can hover over the image or push the pause button (bottom left corner). Once you’ve paused an image we recommend clicking the top right corner icon to enlarge it for a better view. If you move the ‘hover hand’ off the image this will take away the bottom image row for a clean view and continue slideshow. You can also move between images using  the left, right arrow keys on keyboard.

WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE

I use Nikon and like every other photographer I know I suffer from (EAS) Equipment Acquisition Syndrome. However we each our own budgets to work within and its the camera you have that captures the photo not the camera you wish you had! Also when I travel I often have to compromise on weight, many journeys have been done with just a wide angle and the all-in-one 28-300mm Nikon zoom.

3 Nikon Bodies

Lenses (Nikon)
Nikon 300mm F2.8 (older EF version) with 1.4 & 2x converters

Nikon 24-70mm VR
Nikon 105 macro F2.8
Nikon 28-300mm variable aperture (great travel lens)
Nikon 16-35 F4  (wide angle for filter system)
Nikon 50mm 1.8
Tamron 15-30mm F2.8 full frame ( I was mugged and replaced my 14-24mm with this lens)

I use a D7000 with Sigma 10-20mm  & 18-35mm lenses for timelapse too.

DO YOU USE PHOTOSHOP IN YOUR IMAGES

Absolutely!

When shooting in Raw (the digital negative) needs to be edited in some form and for that I use Photoshop. I prefer PS to Lightroom because of layers and overall control I have or image editing.

That said I am no PS expert nor am I a purist in the sense that I change nothing in my image but I only work with what I photographed I do not re-create what I wish I had seen. I don’t drop in skies or add rainbows or light affects that were not in the original raw file. I also don’t do focus blending or distort mountains to appear bigger than they are. I know this is becoming more common place but I like to show place that my clients can see with me so it needs to be real!

I use Photoshop to straighten, sharpen, crop, clone out distractions, correct white balance and enhance colours, textures and tonal contrast. I also however blend images, create panoramic’s, use focus stacking and multiple image blended techniques for example with that of a  full moon.

ARE ANY OF YOUR WILDLIFE IMAGES TAKEN OF TAME ANIMALS

All my photographs are taken of free roaming wild animals. In certain private game lodges the animals have habituated or become accustomed to the vehicles allowing one to get really close. If I have visited a wildlife sanctuary then I have mentioned it in the photo captions.

DID YOU STUDY PHOTOGRAPHY

I am self- taught photographer ( I read a lot of books!) but was fortunate during my time as a safari guide to have guided some amazing wildlife photographers such as Richard Du Toit, Gerald Hinde & Will Taylor and a host of other international photographers, so I had an amazing opportunity to ask for tips and advice on wildlife photography.

These days the amount of information available online is incredible! Photography and it ‘s ongoing evolution means there is always something new to learn.

WHAT DID YOU STUDY

In conjunction to my conservation studies I have also completed numerous field guide courses and studies as listed below.

YOUR PARENTS RUN A NON-PROFIT ORPHANAGE HOW TO MAKE DONATIONS

In 2005 my parents started  a non-profit orphanage in Illovo for abandoned and vulnerable African children. There are approximately 70 children under their care and roughly 40 members of the local community who work there.

Situated on the South Coast of Kwazulu South Africa any form of help or donation is hugely appreciated as fund raising is the main form of income the government subsidies are nowhere near sufficient.  There is also a volunteer program for those that want a more hands on approach, staying there and working with the children. Great photo opportunity of Zulu children!
